Fatigue

Q. I am 32 years old and went through an IVF treatment. It worked and I am six weeks and two days pregnant with twins. However, I am exhausted all the time! Even when I take a nap or go to sleep early, I have a hard time getting up in the morning. I work a full time job and drag through my day. When I get home from work, I could eat a house, and then I want to go to sleep. I am taking my prenatal vitamins and taking a Woman's One A Day. Is there anything I can eat or do to help me get over this awful feeling of fatigue?
-Maryann, Illinois

A. I, too, went through this rough period of constant exhaustion. I went through many long, weary days at work with heavy limbs and sandpaper eyelids. I was always looking for a place to sneak a nap. Napping on my desk at work finally gave away my secret of pregnancy.

The good news is that the fatigue you are feeling will probably lessen as you enter your second trimester. It's usually a phase lasting just a few weeks for most women.

The only thing I found helpful in battling fatigue was exercise. I know it may seem like the last thing you can possibly manage in your tired state, but you may benefit from it. The endorphins released from exercise gave me an incredible energy boost for the day.

In the meantime, eating well and getting as much rest as you can is important. Your body is working overtime developing a new human life!

p.s. Unless your doctor recommends it, I would discontinue taking your other One A Day vitamin. The prenatal vitamin should contain all you need through your pregnancy.
